Brand: Battlemaps.us

A stunning Rocky Mountains vista from the second half of the nineteenth century, painted by German American artist Albert Bierstadt ca. 1859–1863. In 1859 Bierstadt accompanied a surveying expedition to the West, to what is now Nebraska and Wyoming. He completed the painting in 1863 and named it after the leader of the expedition, Union Army General Frederick W. Lander, following the general’s death in the Civil War. Bierstadt’s idyllic, picturesque landscape has since become emblematic of the unsurpassed beauty of the Rockies and of the earliest recorded images of the American West.
