Fought on September 5, 1781, the Battle of the Chesapeake, also known as the Battle of the Virginia Capes, or Battle of the Capes, was a key naval engagement of the Yorktown Campaign during the American War of Independence. The decisive French victory was a crucial point in the campaign and ultimately led to the capitulation of the British troops under Lord Cornwallis, which effectively ended the American Revolution.
