American War of Independence map of the French Navy plan of attack of Yorktown & Gloucester in Virginia in 1781. The French Navy forced the British Royal Navy into retreat. As a result, the combined French–American Army under the command of generals Rochambaud and Washington overwhelmed the defense of the British Army lead by General Cornwallis who surrendered on October 19, 1781.
