Theodor de Bry’s map of Florida, the Caribbean, Central and parts of South America, (based on Giralomo Benzoni’s charts and travels in the New World, 1541–1556), is widely considered by experts as the most beautiful early map of the region. The map contains outlines of Florida and the Gulf Coast, based on Jacques le Moyne’s earlier work. De Bry was a master engraver and a very skilled drawer. His maps are nothing short of spectacular, and, as evident here, richly embellished with sea monsters, galleons, compass roses, coats of arms, and large elaborate title cartouches. His style is not dissimilar to that of another great Dutch mapmaker of the same period — Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer.
