Padrón Real

The Padrón Real, or, the Royal Standard, was the secret Spanish master map of the world in the 1500s, used as a template by the Armada’s pilots on all their charts. Just like with its Portuguese counterpart — the Padrão Real created by Henry the Navigator, the information contained in the Padron Real, with all its latest recorded discoveries and revisions, was a state secret of the highest order and its disclosure was punishable by death.

Diogo Ribeiro (Diego Ribero or Ribeiro), was a Portuguese master cartographer, who worked for many years on the Padrón Real, and eventually became Royal Cosmographer and a chief cartographer of the Spanish crown. Ribeiro prepared the current copy of the standard for Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, who presented it to Pope Clement VII in 1529. Since then, the invaluable map has been kept at the Vatican Library (Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana, Borgiano III).

The 1529 Ribeiro Planisphere is sometimes referred to as the Second Borgia Map, and more often as the “Propaganda Map” — deriving from its common name Planisfero di Propaganda Fide (World Map of the Propagation of the Faith).
