A nineteenth-century etching of Napoleon’s Old Guard at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, near Brussels, Belgium, (then the United Kingdom of the Netherlands). Waterloo was Napoleon’s final defeat. The Old Guard (Vieille Garde) was the elite veteran force and the most prestigious formation in Napoleon’s army. “Waterloo: The Old Guard” was engraved by Jules Jacquet in 1898 after Richard Caton Woodville Jr.’s 1895 oil painting.
