View of Houses in Delft, known as ‘The Little Street’ (Het straatje), is one of only three landscapes painted by its famous author. Johannes (Jan) Vermeer (1632–1675) was renowned for his masterful depiction of 17th-century domestic indoor scenes. Vermeer is recognized as the all-time, most celebrated citizen of Delft, and its one true poet. The Little Street captures brilliantly an unassuming, daily moment on a quaint street, today believed to be Vlamingstraat, numbers 40 and 42. The passageway in the center of the composition was known as Penspoort (Tripe Gate).
