2014 marked the 100th Anniversary of MacDonald “Max” Gill’s famous masterpiece, The Wonderground Map of London Town. The map was commissioned by the transport authorities as a subway poster for the London Tube. The humorous and attractive creation was an instant hit with Londoners, and was made available for sale to the public. The text along the periphery reads: The Heart of Britain’s Empire Here is Spread Out for Your View. It Shows You Many Stations & Bus Routes Not a Few. You Have Not the Time to Admire it All? Why not Take a Map Home to Pin on Your Wall!. MacDonald Gill’s funny map helped save the London Underground [BBC News, 2014]. It also singlehandedly created a new pictorial style in cartography, which exploded around the world over the past century.
