When Industrial Espionage Meant the World

An antique map of the city and harbor of Goa (Ilhas de Goa, or Tiswadi, then capital of Portuguese India), by Jan Huyghen van Linschoten, published in 1595–96. Linschoten copied the map prior to 1589, together with other documents, from secret Portuguese sources, while working as a personal secretary to the much older Portuguese Archbishop of Goa. After the archbishop’s death, he was ordered back to Europe. The secret information Linschoten released after his return to Europe — containing passages and navigational routes — was instrumental in both the English and the Dutch reaching the East Indies and eventually the Far East, and thus breaking a century-long Portuguese trade monopoly.
