Product Description

“What Can Seem Great in Human Affairs to Him Who Knows All Eternity…”

Typus Orbis Terrarum, a sixteenth-century map of the world by Abraham Ortelius from his famous wold atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, published in Antwerp in 1570. The atlas had 33 editions over 41 years. It was translated from Latin into six languages: German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, and English. The success of that first publication of the atlas marked the beginning of the Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish Cartography. The current map, which was a scaled-down version of Marcator’s large-size wall map, was engraved by Frans (Franz) Hogenberg for Ortelius. A cartouche at the bottom reads: Quid ei potest videri magnum in rebus humanis, cui aeternitas omnis, totius que mundi nota sit magnitudo. Cicero:. (What can seem great in human affairs to him who knows all eternity and the enormity of the world? ~ Cicero.)
