A decorative manuscript map of George Washington’s estate Mount Vernon on the banks of the Potomac River, outside of Alexandria, VA. The detailed estate plan features silhouettes of Martha and George Washington, and insets with illustrations from the grounds — the mansion, gardens and ancillary buildings. The plan was hand drawn in watercolor and ink by landscape architect B. Ashburton Tripp ca. 1932. The periphery includes a quote about Mount Vernon from Washington’s correspondences: “I shall begrudge no reasonable expense that will contribute to the improvement and neatness of my farms, for nothing pleases me better than to see them in good order, and everything trim, handsome and thriving… No estate in United America is more pleasantly situated than this. It lies in a high, dry and healthy country 300 miles by water from the sea.”
